I've been retired for 3+ years (or has it been 4?) but I used to commute from the S/B area across the Wilson Br to Bolling AFB. That commute via Old Keene Mill Rd to the Beltway wasn't bad at all leaving before about 7:30 a.m. after the new road and bridge construction. I am not knowledgeable about the Suitland area, but I have to conclude that Springfield's proximity to the Beltway and relative closeness to the Wilson Br is a much better choice than McLean, Arlington, or Montgomery County.

I would say that you'd be better off with Burke. Burke is so quiet and super family friendly. As mentioned your child would get the same education in Fairfax county no matter what middle school he went to. The only difference would be the type of classmates he would have. But yeah Burke or West Springfield would be the ticket to me it just wouldn't be worth it to deal with the longer commute particularly crossing the 14th st bridge. Meanwhile crossing the Woodrow Wilson bridge would involve a reverse commute with little if any traffic.
