Sadly, we need to give up our wonderful friend Trooper. Trooper is 8 years old and needs a new home. Can anyone recommend a shelter/foster home, etc., that would welcome an extremely friendly, healthy and sweet indoor cat? (If anyone know anyone looking to adopt a terrific adult cat, PLEASE let me know - jaydreb@gmail.com).

Thank you.

I don't know the background story, but generally your best bet is going to be to find a home for your cat yourself.

I volunteer with a couple different rescues in the area (all no kill), and none of them are able to just take in an owner turn in. They are BURSTING at the seems with homeless dogs and cats. The majority of no-kill rescues operate using foster homes, meaning that a volunteer has to offer to take the animal into their own home. We actually have so many animals right now that we're paying to board some of them until others get adopted and foster homes open up.

One option you might consider is asking the rescue if they'll post your cat on petfinder for you, and possibly let you keep it but bring it to adoption events on the weekends until it finds another home. That releases some of the burden from the rescue (they don't have to feed or house it), and still allows you to find a new home for the kitty. Another possibility is to advertise it yourself on craigslist (just be sure to do a vet check/home check to make sure they aren't abusing any current animals)

I would go on Pet adoption: Want a dog or cat? Adopt a pet on Petfinder, contact all the local cat rescues in the area, and ask for their suggestions as well.

I appreciate your quick replies. We would be willing to "sponsor" the adoption (i.e., pay for his costs) if that would encourage a shelter to take him in or foster him.

County shelters have to take every animal that comes in their door. Money isn't going to encourage them one way or the other (though it's a nice thing to do, for sure. The shelter I worked at in high school asked for $50 for every relinquished animal, but very few people paid.)

Foster based rescues don't need money so much as they need foster homes and volunteers willing to staff adoption events. Money's great (especially when they pull a cat or dog from a shelter only to find out it needs $1000 in vet treatments), but it's not going to determine whether or not they accept the animal. Availability of foster homes is.

I don't want to be debbie downer--like I said, contact local rescues and see what their situation is. You might get lucky.

You should give this rescue organization a call and see if they can help you: www.lostdogandcatrescue.org The phone number on their web site is (703) 295-DOGS

My daughter and I use to volunteer with this group - one of the largest rescue groups in Northern Virginia. They are a wonderful group of people and I"m sure they will offer some help or at least steer you in the right direction!
