Hi,

I will be working in east chicago (NWI) for 4-5 months, and am currently looking for a place to stay, since my job starts in couple of weeks. My first concern is safety. I do not mind driving 30 mins to work. I am an Asian and have never been to Chicago. Through online research I came to know that Munster and Schererville might be good options. How about Lansing? Is it a safe place for outsiders? Any suggestions will be of great help.

Thanks,
AD

Highland and Griffith would be where i would start looking. 10 minutes to work from there and slightly cheaper rental cost also.

Hello! Welcome to Northwest Indiana! Since you brought up the fact that you are Asian, I assume that having somewhat of an Asian community nearby is important? If so, then I believe that the best bet for you [in Indiana] would be Munster. Most international immigrants [especially from Asia] tend to locate in the northwest suburbs of Chicago. However, if you are going to be working in East Chicago, it would not make sense to live there due to commute time. Your next best bet would be Munster. It has the largest mix of Asians that is very noticeable in the community and pretty much is the only community [with a population of all kinds of Asians] to speak of. It is also a very safe community. Since you will be working here for less than 6 months, I assume you will be renting. There are nice rental units just northwest of the hospital (in the area by Fisher St. and Harrison Ave) and also Oak Crest Apartments on Manor Ave. There are also some rental units just north of Ridge road (by 30th Place and Frederick Ave). If you have trouble finding rentals in Munster, then I would suggest Embassy Place Apartments in Highland. They resemble a condo development that you may see in Munster (like Cambridge Court by the Hospital and Hampton Inn) however these are rentals. However, these are luxury rentals so depending on the lease agreement and your budget, you might want to consider your other available options before choosing this place. If you have any more questions, I will be glad to answer them! Also, if you provide your monthly housing budget, that may help us find a place to suit your needs! Once again, Welcome to Northwest Indiana!

I agree that Munster would be fine for you. It's an established middle class bedroom community with low crime and your commute would be pretty good.

Try renting out a house that's been put up for sale but has not been moving too quickly.
And also one that has been listed for a while.
Of course looking in the area you will be comfortable in, and possibly cheaper than rent.

With so many houses up for sale, you may luck out with something you could end up purchasing.
Just a suggestion!
