Traveling from Indy to Chicago for the weekend. Any construction that would cause long delays getting to 94?

In general, yes there is construction delays in the area where you get onto 94 from 65....(a little secret): instead of taking the ramp straight from 65 to 80/94 (to Chicago), take the next ramp that goes to Detroit, then get off on the first exit (Central avenue) and then get back on heading to Chicago...this actually saves a lot of time as opposed to waiting on the 65 to 94 ramp...hope this helps!

NWI's suggestion is brilliant! I occasionally go east on 80/94 and my heart goes out to the people sitting in the right lanes waiting to exit going west. Get over to the left after the 61st ave exit, don't freak if you see a sign near the westbound ramp to 80/94 that makes you think you've missed your exit (like I did the first time) and then get back over to the right as soon as you've passed the horrendous backup.

I will try heading to Detroit, then turn around at Central Av. Thanks!!!!!! We should be in the area about 2p today, so hopefully it won't be too bad yet.

You're very welcome! Tell us how it works out for you...and to make sure it was worth while, take note of the car that is directly in front of you before you pass the 65 to 94 ramp and then when you get back onto 94, see if the car is ahead of you or not.

Just to let everyone know, taking Central Ave won't work. I live in Lake Station so I know. They have the exit to get on 80-94 from Central Ave closed. Been closed for awhile now due to construction. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news!

No problem! It's a pain in the butt for me because that exit is closest for me. You can get off onto Central but can't get back on 80-94. You have to either go down to Ripley/51 or go through Gary to Broadway. And from the looks of it, won't be done soon. When they do finally open it back up, I'll update this thread to let everyone know.

There is an inexplicable delay going around the ramp from 65 to 80/94, but it really does not last long enough to gamble on a detour if you're not familiar with the area. Keep it simple...the delay isn't huge.

Yep, I found out. You can exit on Central av. but the exit getting back to 94W is closed. Then once you get off, you can't get back on 94 in any direction. We just went up Central a bit and caught rt 6 to get back on. Only cost us 10 minutes, and the ramp to 94 into Chicago from 65 was way backed up, so even that might have been an accidental short cut.
