There is a possibility that we will be moving to the Whiting area. I do not know the area at all...will be moving from out of state. We are looking to rent a home or 2 bedroom apartment. Less than $1000 a month if possible. Safe area. No kids. Small dog and a cat. No more than a 30 minute commute to the BP refinery. I've looked at various apartments in the area and the reviews for what seem like they should be nice apartment complexes all seem horrible...unsafe, run down, etc. I would prefer a home to rent, but I can't find any listed anywhere. Any suggestions?

you can look at the local paper online ... nwi.com

If you are looking at 30 minutes out, you could probably find a nice place outside of Whiting.

So, Whiting is not an option for a place to live? What town do you recommend?

I'm not saying it's not an option ... you might be able to find some newer housing in surrounding towns. The housing in Whiting is very very old.

My home is over 100 years old, so very very old is okay with me. Unless that also means rundown and in need of repairs! Does anyone have any recommendations for apartment complexes that are in nice neighborhoods? Am interested in Whiting, Dyer, Highland, St. John, Merrillville, Crown Point.

Your best best for a rental home would probably be Griffith or Highland. The more affluent towns you mentioned (St. John, Crown Point) don't usually have rental houses, and both would be more than a half hour from BP. Go to craigslist.org for additional options on rental houses.

Crown Point actually has quite a few rentals. There are many houses on the market there that have not been sold and are being rented. However, the commute still would be a long commute. Griffith will be a decent choice but DO NOT rent at "The Mansards" apartments. They are bad news for ANYONE. Your other option for renting may be in south Hammond. Highland may work as well, but many of the under $1000/mo places are unavailable because it is one of the few towns where you can get an inexpensive rental, decent schools, and be in a very safe area. I still would choose Whiting given the fact that it is close to the refinery and to Chicago for more entertainment.

Since schools are not an issue, I feel that south Hammond may work the best for you. It is still relatively safe and it is affordable.

Default More about Whiting

Whiting is a great "small" town, has both old heritage and new. On one hand it has a kind of small town village feel, some streets brick-paved, but it is also near the huge Amoco plant and some other industry. 20-30 minutes to downtown Chicago. There is a big casino. Most homes are from the 1920's and mostly 50ft city lots. There are wood frame and brick buildings. I have seen some which were single family, converted to apartments, and converted back again. There is inland Wolf Lake as well as Lake Michigan
Whiting is surrounded by larger city, Hammond, and some services are shared. There are not large apartment complexes in Whiting. but you may find homes to rent, 2-flats, and some smaller buildings; even something nice to buy and rehab if you have some down payment. You can get a 203K mortgage and include repair money right in your loan. There is a lot of upgrading taking place in the Water Gardens neighborhood, with nice homes in 1-2 blocks of Wolf Lake for reasonable money. <mod edit, no advertising>

Default Moving to Whiting, In.

I am in Munster, IN looking for a place to rent as close to the BP Refinery as possible. I would prefer a two bedroom, two bath with covered area for at least one vehicle. It is for my husband and I but we need room for office or occasional visitors. We have a very pleasant, well groomed Lab that I would love to have with me but probably will not bring. We want a nice area, safe, would not mind not having to move furniture and are willing to pay around $1000 or more if I can bring my Lab. We will be in the area for about 2 years, have excellent credit and as many references as anyone would want. This is really hard when you don't know the area. Would love to purchase one of the older renovated homes but not a good idea the way our work is set up.

There are currently about 71 homes for sale in the Whiting / Robertsdale neighborhood, starting at $30,000. Most are in the range of $80K to $120K, the most expensive was $269K. I cannot help you in finding rentals, my database does not show any currently. But if I can help you sell or move from Munster (that is one of my primary focus communities) and find something in Whiting to buy, let me know off-list.
