Hello My husband is taking a job in Chicago and the company is moving us up north. They want us to live in NW Indiana. I was looking into Valparaiso and loved it after much research. The company says this is to far away and to look into somewhere closer to Schererville or Merrillville. I personally am choosing to stay away from Merrillville because of the schools. My son is three years old and goes to a local elementary school for speech delays( He has an IEP which will transfer state to state). and I also have a 1 year old daughter. We are looking for comparable school systems. The schools down here are "A" rated or Blue ribbon it is called in some states. I also love Crown point but I don't know if the company will think this to far as well. I am looking for an area with low crime, good schools, close to school, close to shopping (i don't want to drive far in the snow), and with rental properties. Any help would be very helpful. Thanks a ton in advance

Do you have to be within a certain distance from work? Crown Point is an excellent choice if you have to stay in Lake County.

Given the fact that the company wants you to stay in NWI and close to the city, I believe Munster would be the best choice. It is only about a half hour to 45 minutes to downtown (depending how fast you drive) and the train station is not far away. The schools are one of the best in NWI and the community is very safe and actively redeveloping and keeping up all of the areas. The only downside for you is that there are not many rental properties available in the town...they are difficult to come by. However, as you are renting, another option is Highland, Indiana. The schools are okay, but are not as well regarded as the other systems. The town is very safe as well and offers tons of shopping and commercial activity as well as quick access to Chicago. There will be a lot more quality rentals available in this town. Another suggestion is Schererville. There are more rentals available than Munster and it is in the Lake Central School district, which is very good. It is a little further to Chicago, but not a bad drive still. Another good option is Dyer, also is the Lake Central Schools. Probably less rentals than Schererville but it has good access to Chicago via I-394 or taking Calumet north into Munster and connecting to 80/94...if you need any more help, don't hesitate to ask any of us!

Why is the company dictating what your choices are?

I could understand if there were residency requirements - but that doesn't seem to be the case.

Where is the company located and will your husband be commuting via road or rail?

They will be paying for all travel expenses to move & while my husband is working because he will be using a company vehicle. Also they are expanding the company to the north meaning my husband will be the only Tech available for a little while so they do not want he far away for emergency calls. Also the company is providing corporate housing meaning they are paying the rent!!! We do have a say of where we want to live but there are areas that are to far of a commute for the company. My husband is commuting Via work truck.

We do not have to stay in lake county but it seems to have great schools with a decent commute. He will eventually be working all over Chicago so I think they want he as close as possible without us sacrificing quality schools and lifestyle.

Can anyone tell me any more about Schererville? Good schools, grocery stores, any malls, any family activities for a toddler and a 1 year old? Is this a nice and safe place to raise two active kids?

too bad Valpo won't work. What about Chesterton? Schererville, Munster, St John and Crown Point are in good locations

I've given my take on Schererville on other posts, so if some of this seems copy and pasted, it is... but it still holds true.

Schererville has a lot of great qualities, so much that it was actually voted #71 in the Top 100 Best Towns of America in 2007 in Money Magazine. I probably like the location and convenience more than any other aspects of living in Schererville. Almost any store you'd need is within 10 mins or so, most of which are in Schererville itself or in neighboring Merrillville near the mall. At the same time you're just 45 mins from Chicago and 25 mins from the beach. Also, if you're into working out, one of the best gyms in the area, Omni 41, is located in Schererville.

The safety and overall suburbia neighborhood feel can also be felt all across the town. It's extremely safe and there are no streets or areas of Schererville that I would feel uncomfortable or unsafe walking around in. The town puts a big emphasis on a community atmosphere, with familiy activities, fairs, etc. Also, they spend a lot of money on the upkeep of parks, which are very nice.

Schererville is also one of three towns (the other two are Dyer and St. John) which flow into the Lake Central School Corporation, which is a strong district and well regarded in the area. One of the downsides is the really heavy traffic at times on Rt. 41 and Rt. 30, the two main streets in the town. Here are a couple links that might interest you. If you have any other questions, I'd be happy to help.
