"The inference that Munster is a snooty area is kind of laughable to me..."

For what it's worth, and without trying to start a war here, we moved back to Munster from Crown Point several years ago to get away from the snootiest of people in the Region! I grew up in Munster and can definitely recognize pretension when I see it. Munsterites are much more genuine and neighborly in my opinion. To get back to the actual thread, this seems like a contributing factor to the "protection" of the community, along with the apparent willingness of people who move here to acculturate.

I can definitely understand what you are saying. I have several friends that live in Crown Point and some folks do complain of snootiness there; however, the main difference that some have said is that many of those snooty folks chose Crown Point because the relative affordability allows folks to act and look more snooty than they could in Munster. A $300,000 brand new McMansion in Crown Point looks better on the surface than a $300,000 older and smaller home in Munster. One of my classmates in high school said that their parents moved to Munster from Crown Point for long-term stability. They saw snootiness in both Munster and Crown Point but the difference they said was that most of the Munsterites could actually afford the snootiness. When the housing crisis occurred and they saw that Crown Point had one of the highest foreclosure rates in the region (and the highest of any suburban area in Indiana - Highland had the lowest), they felt even more sound in their decision to move.

One thing I will say is that I really believe that the snootiness in Crown Point will not outlast the snootiness in Munster because I do foresee some flight again as it is occurring on the north side of the city. I have been told that Merrillville had a short-lived snooty persona in its very early days (mainly because it was the popular golden-child place to move). Crown Point is the popular golden-child place to move right now because it is also so accessible for most people to "move-up" into. And part of the snootiness in CP right now is between the dated and more diverse north side of the city (that many snobs call "fake Crown Point" or "Merrillville") and the newer and less diverse south side of the city as folks think the only important and authentic area of CP is south of 101st.
