My husband is working a job at the BP Oil Refinery in Whiting, IN. We are looking for RV parks and/or campgrounds to park our 38 ft. 5th wheel while here. Does anybody know of any nice places close to Whiting? Illinois or Indiana doesn't really matter; we're used to paying multi-state taxes due to his job so that's not an issue. The only one we've found so far is in Michigan City and that's a 40 minute commute (at best) for him. We're quiet people with no children but do have 2 dogs. Any recommendations will be greatly appreciated.

There aren't any really close by.

This one in Cedar Lake maybe the closest. I know nothing about any of these.

Cedar Lake Ministries :: RV Park & Camping

This one in Portage is closer than Michigan City

Yogi Bear's Jellystone Camp/Resort Portage

This one is pretty far also, but it does have the "advantage" of being close to 65 so the commute might be quicker. I've driven past it hundreds of times.

Caboose Lake Campground

Most places won't be open until the spring. It's just too cold. I doubt you will find any closer than these. Lake County and the Chicago area(you do realize Whiting borders Chicago right?) is not really a "camping" spot. It's seems like years ago there was a spot in Hobart/Gary off of 65, but that might have closed or just been a place that sold RVs.

Default RV Parks

Thank you very much for the info and yes I do realize its right close to Chicago! I've heard of the first two but the 3rd one you gave me is a new one that I'll definitely check out. Appreciate you taking the time to respond. Have a good day!

Another RV Park that is not advertised but I know about it since my mom lived there and we would visit her with our 5th wheel every year, is Salt Creek. There are permanent & temporary residents that live there, and many of the temporary residents (like you would be) are construction workers. They are MUCH cheaper than Jellystone, of course they are just an RV park, no extra stuff like Jellystone:

Salt Creek RV & Mobile Home Park

219-762-4271
6888 Melton Rd
Portage, IN 46368

Good luck!

Default Thanks for the recommendations

Thank you for that recommendation. Since they don't have a web site I'll have my husband drive over and check it out.

I know it is a little ways from Whiting, but it is right off of 80/94 in Portage. Let me know what your husband thinks! I use to know the Manager there well, but he retired recently. We always liked staying there.

My husband will also be going to BP on April 2nd. Just wondering how you made out finding a place since that's what I'm working on doing now. Have 5th wheel and dog also. Appreciate any info.

The jelly stone park campground is not that far, and is one the closest... It's 20 minutes away, I just called and found out... My husband is also working at BP oil refinery...

It's more than 20 miles away and definitely more than 20 minutes away. In the middle of the night, with no traffic, one might be able to make the trip in 30 minutes. Most times it will be at least 45 and can be more with traffic.

It sounds as if some one was underestimating the proximity.
