Hi Guys,

I have a quick question for the local Hammond experts. Me and my wife (25) are looking to buy our first home around NWI, and we found a beautiful house in Hammond. Problem is, it's in Hammond and we dont know exactly what we are getting into with the area. It is pretty much as south as you can go in Hammond (right after you cross over Calumet into Hammond, the house is about 30 seconds to the West. Any tips would be awesome. Thanks!

When you say "right after you cross over calumet into Hammond" what is the other cross street? If it is as far south in Hammond as possible, that would be River Drive/177th. Is it in the area of Riverside Park bordering Munster or elsewhere?

If so, then you would be in the safest part of Hammond which is still very safe. Mostly single-family homes. However, your primary concern would be the schools. Hammond schools are not the greatest and if you have any kids that is something to think about. However, it would probably be a good buy and long-term income property.

Thanks for the reply! We are not looking to have kids in this house It's 2 blocks from 177th actually, around 175th and Jackson. Would that still be considered good?

The area is still safe. For the most part, if you are south of 165th in Hammond, then you are pretty safe. Even safer better if you are south of 170th.

River flooding issues are mostly resolved. I dont think that side of the river got much water anyway. Check to see if flood insurance is required by your lender. If it is, it can be expensive.
