I have a friend looking to purchase a house & business near this area, but they are from Indianapolis. Is this a relatively safe area? How safe is it around the Morton Senior High School? They could also possibly buy / rent a house 15-30 minutes away, especially if the schools are better. However the main concern is still to get an idea of the general safety and a sense of the area around Phrommer Park and Morton Senior High School.

thanks!

What kind of business?

I would recommend living in Munster, their schools are much better.

Buy a business? probably, the city has pretty good incentives for new businesses from what I hear.

Buy a house in Hammond? not a great investment in my opinion

Good schools? definitely not

Hessville is the most well-regarded neighborhood of Hammond. It doesn't necessarily have much of the historic type of homes found in Hammond's far southwest area but it is one of the areas that saw the least flight from the city. It is also one of the safest areas of the city even in the northern area of the neighborhood (most of south Hammond is pretty safe once you get south of 169th.

Buying a home in Hammond may not be the best investment if you are looking to flip, but if down the line you are looking to rent, it would be a good investment as you can get a very livable home for a low cost. However, the schools are not the best. If schools are really important (and private school is not an option), I would choose Highland or Munster.

Highland and Munster would be much much more expensive to buy a home and business in (with Munster costing even more than Highland). Highland is also offering incentives for individuals to locate businesses there so this could be an option.

15-30 minutes from the area in Hammond listed could also open up the Crown Point area as an option. Crown Point has a lot of new housing options that cost much less than older and smaller options in towns like Munster and Highland. The schools there are good and the city is offering incentives for businesses as well. The issue is that the low cost is mostly due to many areas of the city being far out.
