(The parking garage is owned by the university and has nothing to do with it.)
Ok, now I remember!

Exclamation Development Game Changers

This first article talks about these townhomes that will have private elevators for each unit. That amenity alone makes this sound like a very upscale project: Vacant lot in downtown Valpo could be site for townhomes

This next article talks about the transit hub development plan. I think this alone would be a game changer for Valpo and really set it further apart from other areas of NWI. The key will be to keep these developments upscale in nature. This may sound like a stretch, but if done right, the quality may definitely rival that of Downtown Naperville or Downtown Carmel: Valpo transit hub could include a canal, new housing

Thoughts?

Exclamation The Lakes of Valparaiso - First Units Open

Lakes of Valparaiso celebrates grand opening of resort-style apartments

Well, the first units have been moved into now! This development will really be interesting when 100% completed. Still curious to see what the overall impact to the school system will be.

Exclamation Meijer

It seems that every year, Valpo is getting less reliant on Portage and Merrillville for certain stores and necessities, which is good for them! Also getting some first locations in the region for some places like McAllister's Deli.

Meijer store in Valpo is still on

It's not Valpo's school district though - it's Washington Township.

Yes, I'm aware. One of the biggest points of local opposition was that it potentially would overwhelm the Washington Township school district.

I'm still waiting on that stupid Panda Express.

But honestly, I'm not that thrilled about Meijer. We already have Walmart, Town & Country, two Straks, Aldi, Target ... I think we could've done without Meijer.

Yeah... Meijer is a good supermarket, wish we had them in KC, but Valpo is pretty saturated as it is. A Trader Joe's would be nice but if they do ever come to NWI I imagine it would be in southern Lake. McAllisters is really good though. I like them better than Panera.

I am not too familiar with commercial land availability in Valpo, but I know that when it was stated that Whole Foods was looking in Valpo, I had pictured that the Meijer spot would be a good fit. Are there any vacant storefronts or plots of land where a WF could go in Valpo? Maybe when the Kmart inevitably shuts down, that would be a good spot! Or maybe where my favorite closed parking structure is! lol

That Kmart is apparently the one of their best/highest producing stores. Shocks me every time I hear that.

The best place is owned by the university and would never be let go by them - it's the old Kmart bldg across from your favorite parking garage.
