Our family is moving to Demotte, IN this spring. I was in the process of filling out FAFSA forms when it occurred to me that I have NO idea what colleges are in the area! I know the big colleges (Valpo, Purdue), but I was hoping there were some community colleges (less $$). My google searches aren't giving me much info because I don't know if they are trade schools, tech schools, online schools, or just general brick and mortar colleges.

Im looking for a brick and mortar, general community college for a person with an undecided major.

Any suggestions? Thanks!

There are numerous Ivy Tech campuses which is most similar to what many think of as a community college. See this website for locations: Campus Information - Ivy Tech Community College

State laws now require that credits from Ivy Tech be accepted at state universities such as IU and Purdue. People can complete their general ed requirements at Ivy Tech and transfer to IU or Purdue.

There is also a Purdue campus in Hammond and an IU campus in Gary. You can begin at both schools with an undecided major. You can still apply to IU. I don't know if Purdue has an application deadline.

I think the closest Ivy Tech Community College to you will be in Valparaiso, otherwise they offer plenty of online classes too.

Cc in indiana you want that college to be part of the state community college network. If im not mistaken ivytech is the only cc up there that is part of that. Demotte you might try st joseph's. Other than that there's iun, puc and calumet college of st. Joeseph in whiting bit all those have some nice distance from demotte.

Too bad you aren't moving to Lowell(or at least somewhere in southeast Lake County), since otherwise you could get a tuition rate barely above the regular in district rate at South Suburban College(local community college) in South Holland, a little bit west of the IL/IN border. I mistakenly thought their Lake County rate applied to all counties in NWI, but apparently it only applies to Lake County ones after I did a check:

I went to Ivy Tech in Valpo for a semester. It's a very good school. Very organized and easy to deal with.
