Still looking at NWI towns - what does anybody know about DeMotte, IN? What would that commute be to get on the South Shore Train? I would only have to do that occasionally as I would work mostly from home. Seems like it might be pretty rural? Maybe up and coming? Diverse? Any info appreciated!

Here's what I know to answer your main questions:

-Commute time to Gary Metro South Shore station - 40 mins. Then train ride to downtown is about 50.
-Rural, small town feel
-IMO, not up and coming really. Some newer comstruction, but not a town that is rapidly growing necessarily.
-Not diverse racially. About 95% white.
-Feeds into Kankakee Valley schools. Above average but not considered among the best in the area.
-Closest retail corridors and signifcant restaurant options are 20 mins to Crown Point or 30 min to Merrillville.

One thing I know about the Kankakee Valley HS (located between DeMotte and Wheatfield on SR 10) is that it gets small town rural kids, but the school is growing with about 1075-1100 in the HS enrollment, with the enrollment maybe to increase in the future. School buildings in the KV district are very nice IMO, maybe not as good of schools academically as Valpo, Crown Point, or Munster, but still not bad. Another schooling option is Covenant Christian in DeMotte, which is pretty small though.

Since the commute to the South Shore would be an occasional thing, I wouldn't worry. It will take a while, but if you're not doing it on a regular basis ..... the commute in the Winter might be tricky, but just allow yourself extra time. The State typically does a good job on the Interstates.

If you're looking for a quiet place, away from the hustle & bustle it might be a good fit for you. You won't want for fresh fruits & vegatables, as it's an busy farming community.

I know Demotte really well went to KV schools as did my children. I have sold a ton of homes in the Demotte area because of the easy access to Interstate 65. The area has grown quite a bit in the last 10 years and is continuing to grow while still keeping that rural feel. Honestly from 65 it will take you 20 minutes to the merrillville exit where the malls and tons of different dining experiences are. 65 is tough during the winter however. Lots of fresh vegetables and fruits during the summer, parks, pools and shopping available.

Thanks - I appreciate all the good info! I guess ORD and MDW are the only airport options around? What would the commute to those be - generally - I know it would be more difficult in the winter.

Is the up-north looking restaurant, called "Boundary Waters" I think, in DeMotte?
