My wife and I were anchored of of Dunes acres on Sunday June 23 2013 in about 4 feet of water, was taking my first swim of the summer, when a rude lady started yelling from shore that we could not anchor there and that it was private property,we left as my wife hates confrontations. Is it indeed private property as we were not on her beach but in 4 feet of water.

The lake itself is not private property. Under Indiana Law all areas below the Ordinary High Water Line are open to public use. This means that even if you wanted to step out onto the beach, below the high water mark, you can do so.

The lady was wrong.

Lake Michigan is considered "Navigable Waters" and treated differently than Public Waters. Given that the OP was in 4 feet of water, I'm pretty confident he was fine.

Who would you contact if you wanted to settle the dispute in that case? Is that the jurisdiction of town police, or is there a coast guard station that serves NWI?
