Hi, I've been on the Illinois forum asking about living somewhere within an hour and a half of the Shriners Hospital in Chicago where our daughter may be receiving treatment for a condition she was born with. We were going to try and find a spot west or north of Chicago until I got a load of the taxes in IL and also WI. Many have referred me to NWI for a lower COL and its proximity to Chicago, so I'm checking it out.

Ok, here's the thing, and I know I'm going to get flamed, but oh well. I do not want to put my family anywhere near places like Gary or some or the south Chicago neighborhoods unless I know it is very safe. I'm hearing stuff about some of these rougher spots spilling further into NWI and that makes me nervous. I have no problem living in Indiana. I would actually love to plop us down in some quiet farm community, as long as we could get to Chicago and back in a reasonable amount of time. unlike the 5 plus hours (northern Mich.) it takes us now (in good weather).......and by reasonable I'm talking and hour and a half at the most...... but not if we're eventually going to be overrun by crime and plummeting neighborhoods.

I'm from Detroit originally, and although Detroit proper is a horrifying place, there are plenty of very nice, safe, livable communities all around it. Is it the same way in NWI in correlation with Gary and S. Chicago, or is the region changing for the worse?

There are plenty of nice, safe, livable places to live in NWI. Try looking in Highland, Munster or even parts of Hammond and Whiting for easiest access to Chicago and Shriners.

I would actually direct you to Chesterton ... doable to Shriners in under an hour and a half and right on the expressway and easy access to the South Shore.

Most of craptastic NWI is north of 80 and west of 65. That's not to say that there aren't crappy areas outside of that zone or that all of that corner is a cesspool, but is a good general rule of thumb.

There is also Valparaiso and Crown Point. Chesterton is a part of the Duneland area so it does have a larger population
when the warmer weather arrives (second summer homes). We've passed through Whiting, so I don't have much information
about it other than it has a Pierogi festival and sorry - that smell of gasoline.

the Chesterton/Porter area is very nice and well-located highway wise. Plus you can enjoy the Indiana Dunes National Park there as well.
