Hello, I'm thinking of moving to Michigan city from Chicago soon to start over. My lifestyle is basically quiet here so moving to a smaller city would suite me perfectly. I'm almost 50 and not planning on doing much partying so I just want some advice and information on the area as far as healthcare jobs which is my background. I've noticed that the cost of living seems to be much cheaper than Chicago. Any comments would be greatly appreciated Thanks

St. Anthony's is in MC ... you can check the Franciscan website for openings.

But why MC? There are 10 other towns in NWI that I would choose before MC and I'm curious why you've chosen this town.

I was just there yesterday (seeing the dangerous shelf ice and getting run off the beach by the local pd ... I live on the edge) and every time I'm there I think, how sad is this? All this opportunity ... this proximity to the lakefront and ... blech.

Ya, I have to agree. I think Michigan City would be last on my last. I live about an hour away and sometimes venture there to the outlet malls. Looks pretty unattractive and I too thought it was a waste considering the waterfront opportunities.

I work in Michigan City and like it. They seem to be building more shopping and chain restaurants. Nice movie theatre. I feel realatively safe working and shopping there day or night. It depends on what you are looking for. Valpo has a nice downtown area with plenty of places to shop and eat, Chesterton is close to the Dunes, but not a lot of shopping. If you like country living check out Westville or the outskirts of Michigan City. Good luck to you!

Thanks guys for the info. I am still looking in other areas in Indiana to make a decision as well. I have been to MC and the people seemed nice, not to base that on the city itself but anyplace else MUST be better that Chicago. Thanks.

I don't understand why Michigan City hasn't attracted more businesses and the downtown -which
must have been special many years ago. Some nice buildings just waiting for a comeback.
They are also very close to the outlet mall and then there's Lake Michigan. The Blue Chip Casino
was suppose to help revitalize the area but...........The odd thing is, just drive the other way
15 minutes north into New Buffalo, Michigan which expanded (and it's main street is very small).
Expensive condo's, water front second homes, boat docks.......I would think the lower taxes in
MC being in Indiana would bring more construction, businesses and a revitalization around that area.

That is a good question. I actually was there this past weekend and I was wondering the same thing. Decided to check out Lake Michigan in its frozen state which was awesome by the way. MC does seem to have a bit of crime and some of the areas just look horrible. It really does seem to have the opportunity.
