Hello everyone. My job is forcing a move again and we have narrowed down our choices to 2 places, Dallas and NW Indiana. I work for the airlines and will be based out of OHare. I know it's a bit of a drive, but I only have to go in once a week or so.

We are working with a realtor and have been focusing in on Valpo and Chesterton. are there any other areas you would suggest? I'm not terribly familiar yet.

Our priorities: Family friendly. We have boys (12 and 10) that are active in sports, etc. We live in a great family neighborhood now (Overland Park, KS) and are looking for the same. Our budget is up to 450k, we are looking for a 4 bedroom newer type house with great schools.

Thanks for the input!

Honestly, with a budget that crosses the $400k mark and a job at O'Hare as well as desire for top notch schools there is no reason not to look at suburbs in Illinois...

Taxes, bankrupt state government, politics, .........

I'm not trying to go off the tracks. We have spent a lot of time looking. Illinois is not on the list.

I do appreciate the input though.

There's some really nice homes in the Munster, Dyer, St. John and Crown Point areas that would be a good fit for your threshold. They all have fantastic school systems with sports being a big part of their programs. Lake Central has been doing fantastic in Sports as of late. The area as a whole has been booming with new development as well.

There's nothign wrong at all with Chesterton or Valpo either of course. Both fine choices to look.

Good luck on your house hunting! NWI is way better than Dallas IMO

I know you mentioned that your realtor has been focusing on Valpo and Chesterton and those are both good options, but are you opposed to living in Lake County? Just one day a week may make it do-able but Valpo is a haul from O'Hare, like 90 mins each way on a good day and not during rush hour. If choosing between those two, I'd probably go with Chesterton just because it's closer to O'Hare and during the winter you'll be dreading a trip from Valpo to O'Hare. That being said, both Valpo and Chesterton would be very good places to live.

If you would be willing to consider Lake County, iidream is right to recommend Munster, Dyer, St. John, Schererville, (Dyer Schererville and St. John all flow into the Lake Central School district), and possibly Crown Point. But CP is getting close to that "dread the drive to O'Hare during winter" distance too. Munster, Dyer, Schererville, and St. John should keep you within an hour max to O'Hare if you take 294, and they all have plenty of options of newer construction in your price point with good schools and very successful, competitive sports options for kids, both connected to school and as part of the Parks Departments in town.

Hi there,

I grew up in Valpo and live in Kansas City now - I'm familiar with both Overland Park and NWI. The closest area in feel to JoCo in NWI will be the Schererville/St. John/Dyer area. You should have zero problems getting what you want with that budget.

Valpo and Chesterton are nice areas too. Valpo has a really nice downtown area that IMO is the best in NWI. Lots of restaurants, shops, etc. No shortage of sports for kids in either town, I can speak from direct experience. Both Valpo and Chesterton have really nice park systems as well.

Porter County is much quieter - it's farther away from Chicago and you can definitely feel the difference. Lake County definitely feels busier due to proximity to Chicago - those cities are actually very similar to Overland Park in terms of pace.

Overall - you can't go wrong with any of these areas. All family friendly, safe towns with good schools. I would be loathe to recommend an area like Valpo for a daily commute into Chicago, much less O'Hare, but if you are only needing to go 1x week, it could absolutely work.

If you only have to go to O'hare once a week or so, you will be fine with the Porter county towns. Both Valpo and Chesterton are great family towns. There will be plenty of nice houses you will like in your price range in both towns.

Have you considered Southeast Wisconsin as well?

Yes we did. Part of the reason we are considering this location though is family in MI that we will be driving (ish) distance from. WI would negate that benefit, looks nice though.
