I have recently had very bad experiences with Sprint. I don't know about the service in Porter County, but I would not recommend Sprint at all.

There are two types of cellular techhnology in America. One is GSM operated by AT&T. The other is CDMA operated by Verizon. How well a phone works depends upon how well the phone is made, the distance to the nearest tower and the speed. The 3G speed is the most common across America. It replaced 2G which is slower and still in use in some parts of the United States. Also, some areas of the United States only have on cellular carrier. If your only carrier is CDMA then your Sprint phone will should work very well.

I bought two cheap phones from Tracfone. One was GSM the other CDMA. They worked equally well in my very remote area. The only explanation I have that could explain that we have better service than our county neighbors is because federal and state routes cross through my town. The other explanation can be public utilities commission can put a lot of pressure on telephone companies to perform as promised, and by the laws and regs that allow them to operate.
