Seeing as so many communities in the Region are trying to pump life into their older, downtown districts...I thought it might be a good idea to have a thread devoted to such developments. Recently, Crains Chicago had a nice story on downtown Griffith. The Region actually has decent urban/walkable bones, from Whiting, Hammond, Miller/Gary, Valpo, East Chicago, Hobart, Chesterton, Michigan City, Munster etc....

This thread is meant to highlight regional development news in those older urban/walkable districts.

Having worked in downtown Griffith since 2000, it is nice to see the transformation of what was close to a ghost town to near 100% occupancy and a reversal of people leaving to new buyers coming in as the article stated. Having the groups of businesses work together to promote such popular things as the Rock n Rail fest or the Central Markets as well as the current group of town politicians that enabled one of the first facade grant programs in the region are probably the best reasons for the turnaround. IF they can replicate that success with the stores around K-Mart, things can really take off.
