This month, the city of Crown Point is opening the new dog park across from the new baseball diamond. When I first heard of this, I was really excited about it because I feel Crown Point has needed this for a long time. Many other communities in the region have opened dog parks, and the one in Lemon Lake is just too large in my opinion.

However, after researching it doesn't look like I would ever consider using it. They are proposing to require people to add the city to their homeowner's insurance policies, plus I think the proposed fees are out of line with other communities. They are going to be charging resident's $60 for the first dog, $20 for each additional one for residents. The price doubles for non-residents. Other communities charge around $25 a year for residents, except for places like Munster (which have a higher average income).

The price was a turn-off but I thought that I would at least give it a try, but the requirement to add the city to my homeowner's insurance is a deal breaker. I don't think the city has the right to require that. I understand wanting to protect themselves, but I looked at other region cities and towns and no other one has this strange requirement. If they want to be more strict with its usage, they should have a city-wide ordinance to license your dogs. Any thoughts?
