Actually Gary's crime rate has dropped a lot!

I think it's only number 5 in the top crime rate areas now.

However I've never been there so I don't really know!

Artemis--haven't been on this site in awhile---the one on Ridge Rd. (It was pretty borderline 20 some years ago--just doesn't seem like a place a lone female, driving a nice car, should be visiting now. Would love to hear differently.)

I am a Gary native and am back home frequently, all my family is still there. Gary is still experiencing rough times, due to the lack of tax revenue the city has some of the highest property taxes in the state. However, all the horror stories are greatly exaggerated. Even when the crime rate was through the roof, 90% of that crime dealt with people who were involved in something criminal (drugs, gangs, etc), 5% was domestic type stuff, the other 5% varied (had a LONG discussion with our former chief of police about the numbers and perception of Gary).

The main issue now is that a lot of Chicago transplants have moved into Gary since they have been forced out of Chicago Public Housing due to the CHA's Plan for Transformation and other programs of the Daley administration to redevelop blighted neighborhoods (i.e. gentrification). Since most of these Chicagoans have housing vouchers, they are moving into older neighborhoods all over Gary, primarily the ones where the property owner has left the home as a rental and moved elsewhere (Crown Point has become a popular destination which is STILL unbelievable to me). Chicago residents bring COMPLETELY different attitudes and problems and when you add them with the low-income residents in Gary, well, more problems. That being said, I've never felt unsafe in Gary and it is still home to me.

I would not be surprised if in 5-10 years you see similar redevelopment efforts in Gary to utilize the city's closeness to Chicago and direct routes into Chicago by interstate and rail.

rrah, that would be Ridgelawn Cemetery. Still sort of borderline, it has a Gary mailing address, but is located out in the township.

It would be safe to go there during the daytime.

Right now I'd say it's pretty cold.

Nice town, but CP has never been viewed as the most inviting place for diverse groups of people to live.

Default Went down hill pretty fast

That town is sickening. Honestly there are crack heads everywhere, there are beggers everywhere. Kids just freely sell drugs publicly. I know there are towns like that in every state but how does one of the nicest towns back in my fathers day become the nastiest in our area 30 years later? It makes me sick, really it does.

I thought this thread was about the condition of Gary, IN. Not the diversity of Crown Point.
