Hi everyone. My fiance and I are planning on moving to DeMotte and we were wondering if there is any problems with racism there. Being that the pop. Is about 96 white and the next percent being hispanic, 4%, we were just curious. We ourselves are hispanic and we just wanted to know, we wouldnt want to make life hard for ourselves or our daughter. Thank you.

In and of itself, DeMotte isn't a place where people would say it has a "racism problem" however, it is in the general area of where quite a few folks who have previously lived in suburban-areas that have become majority-minority have moved and so there could be some apprehension. Then again, it depends "how hispanic" you are. As you know, Hispanic is a very broad and diverse category. Is your family 1st generation, 2nd generation, 3rd generation, or beyond? Are you a White Hispanic or Non-White Hispanic? In general, many Whites in rural areas are not too apprehensive (anymore at least) when it comes to Hispanics/Latinos unless they feel that their presence has pushed them out of agricultural or manufacturing employment. Unfortunately, in general, most racial apprehension in NWI (and pretty much everywhere) tends to be with any race and Black.

If you desire a small-town/rural setting that may be a bit less of a racial concern, you may want to check out Hebron. If you are okay with a larger area, check out Hobart, Crown Point, or Winfield which are more diverse and have a larger and growing Hispanic population (especially Hobart).

It's about time white people started owning up to the fact that white flight is entirely a problem of their own making. Minorities moving in isn't what causes suburbs to decline, it's the mass exodus of the more affluent being replaced by people who are less affluent regardless of their race. Desirable businesses follow the money and quality of life for everyone left declines. If their isn't a huge downward shift in the economic status of an area it's not going to decline in any meaningful way. This isn't a rant on the person I quoted but the Midwest mentality in general...really a shame what has happened with some of the cities/suburbs there and REALLY frustrating that whites are still pointing their fingers at everyone else.

To address the OPs concern, while Demotte isn't exactly brimming with enlightened folks, it's probably not alot worse than anywhere else in NWI that isn't predominantly hispanic. If ones behavior is in keeping with the rest of whatever area you choose you should be fine. On the otherhand if your family outwardly displays hispanic heritage in ways that would magnify differences Demotte wouldn't be a great place for you guys.
