Very unfortunate (and seemingly avoidable) domestic situation that occurred at the home located at 1200 W 97th pl in the Harvest Ridge subdivision on the north side of town. I believe this is the first murder in Crown Point this year.

Father charged with son's murder at Crown Point home

This was so CLEARLY an isolated incident where the public was not at harm; however, many comments (most which have been deleted now by The Times) were so nasty talking about how "Crown Point is the new Merrillville/Gary" because of the increased Black population. Some other comments also connected this matter with how "it will get worse" if The Fountains project is developed as well as the Broadway bus extension. Records show that this family also owned property in Merrillville and Gary and of course, there was commentary about how "they just keep going south" tied to their property ownership as well.

There have been other incidents in the city as a whole that have been more concerning to public safety; however, it just so happens that the most recent murders in this side of town (which again, were domestic situations and not random targets or where the public was at direct risk) were involving Black families. Middle-class Black families whom aside from their family issues seemed to live relatively normal lives and did not wreak havoc in their community such as many believe that happens when a demographic shift occurs.

I am in no way shape or form condoning any of these actions at all; however, people need to remember the difference between a domestic situation and a random crime. Overall, CP is still a safe area.

Thanks for the article Northwest. I had not seen it prior.

Domestic situations should not reflect on the town as a whole. Crown Point has a lot to offer with excellent schools and many different home price points. Not to mention relatively low crime. This unfortunate incident should not change the outlook people have on the town in general IMO.

Incidents such as this can occur anywhere and involve any demographic.

It seems this tragedy could have been possibly averted if family members had gone to authorities when this guy first started threatening them with a firearm.

The Harvest Ridge area has a Crown Point address but the kids go to Lake Central. My brother lives over in that area.
Most refer to that area as more Schererville than CP.

I think you may be thinking of Harvest Acres, not Harvest Ridge. Harvest Acres is a CP address but known to most as Schererville and kids go to LC schools. Harvest Acres is the subdivision just West of the Cemetery, south of 30 with the entrance road being Harvest Drive. That's not where this murder took place. This took place on W 97th place, which is a Crown Point address and I believe kids go to Merrillville schools.

I think what you've said is extremely important. As a younger member of this community and having grown up here, I cannot stress how blatantly racist I've heard alot of the older community, including elderly members of my family, be towards the growing population of black (and Hispanic) people here in Crown Point. I am of lower income and I seriously welcome the idea of public transit happening here in Cp, but yet again we run into people saying, "it'll bring in the blacks" 1) as if some kind of plague and 2) assuming everyone here can just afford a vehicle. I'm white and I own a vehicle, but I feel as though lowering our carbon footprint is more important.

Rant over. Classism and racism in this city needs to stop.
