If there had to be a different name, South Shore would be my suggestion. We already have the South Shore Line, and we’re literally the south shore of Lake Michigan. There’s a community called South Shore in Chicago, but there’s also a neighborhood called South Chicago on the South Side, so there’s that.

NWI is the largest steel producing region in the US, so there could be a play on the industrial strength of the region. The Steelyards / Steelville ? Meh.

The Calumet river runs through NWI... How about Calumet Valley (or CalVal for short)? Or Calumet Shores? That sounds nice.

In all honesty, NWI is fine with me. It clearly lays out what part of Indiana we’re in and isn’t as generic as “The Region.”
I agree with you. I actually never heard the term “Region” growing up. It wasn’t until I went to college at Purdue that I started hearing the term from people from elsewhere in Indiana. It was normally used in a negative context. “Oh, you’re from ‘the Region.’” Normally followed by “so you’re from Gary?” But, I do like how people in NWI have embraced the term. I sort of like it. But yeah, Northwest Indiana is fine by me.

Not sure how long it's been called that. I'm older than dirt, and that term has been around longer than me.

Nothing wrong with NWI , it's OK. Calumet Shores sounds better and so does Indiana Coast.

Like that too. I do like Indiana Coast the best though and Calumet Shores.
NWI as stated by name is still OK.
