We’re planning to move to Merrillville. We want to know what it’s like over there for LGBT people.

You’ll probably be tarred and feathered on a daily basis.

Seriously though, just like most every place else, nobody cares.

Northwest Indiana is the more progressive part of the state, I think you'll be fine. Any other specific questions, feel free to ask.

It's a conservative environment but people generally mind their own business. I wouldn't imagine it would be much of a problem at all. It really wasn't even a problem 30 years ago (dang I am old).

No one cares unless YOU make an issue of it.

It is a fine place to live as an LGBT. It is progressive and you should be just fine.

I know I'm late but there's more resources being available for the LGBT community in NWI. I live in Valparaiso/Porter Co. and there isn't much here for them. I'm in a same sex relationship and have held my partners hand in public and have never received a comment or anything of the sort. Michigan City has their own Pride festival and Lake Co. is working on their first one for next year. Lake Co. (Crown Point) and Michigan City also both have PFLAG meetings.
