Help please. I may be relocating to Wheatfield within 6 months. The population is only 900, yet there are 112 homes for sale. WHY?

Two real estate people won't give me answers. Is there a problem in the area like contaminated drinking water, crime ( I don't think this is a problem), or does the county have plans for a relocation settlement?

Found a nice, small rural area in WI where most of the homes were for sale. I found out that the Green Bay Catholic Charities were relocating refugees to some adjacent land close to the area.

Does anyone have insight into the outflux in Wheatfield? Is there a town nearby that is bad?

Thank you.

I think the reason you're seeing so many houses for sale has more to do with how the USPS assigns addresses. If Wheatfield had the only post office in the area houses in nearby towns will have a Wheatfield address. That's what will appear in the MLS.

Look at a map of the listings. You'll see most of them are not actually in Wheatfield.

What the post above me said is exactly the case. There are houses up to 5 miles past the city limits that have Wheatfield addresses. A lot of residents who sell in the area also just end up moving to a different part of the area, maybe to a bigger house, closer to family, etc.

To answer your question, nothing is wrong with Wheatfield, IN....just a bit boring (but I'm sure you already knew that). Its a nice, quiet little town with a good school system, lots of locally owned businesses, and plenty of farmland surrounding it all. Its quiet, but doesn't seem like its too out in the boonies like if you were to go a little more south and east. Its close enough to Valpo, Merrillville, and Michigan City for many popular stores and chains, and Chicago is only 2 hours or so away.

I heard today that Nipsco/Nisource will be shutting down the whole power plant facility in Wheatfield instead of just part of it. Maybe a few years off but it's coming and not a lot of high paying jobs in the area to replace it. Anyone else read or hear about it too?

That's probably why there are so many homes now on the market.
OP: See if you can rent one.
