I'm downtown regularly later in the evenings. It's not unsafe. There might be, heaven forbid, minorities and even homeless people in the area... but it's not unsafe. There was a shooting in the loop about a month ago on a Saturday afternoon, but that was a domestic isolated incident. The loop and near north side are still definitely safe at any time of day.

Hey flammadiddle, did you see this property? I know you wanted a home with land. This one is in Crown Point, listed at $584,500, 5,500 sq. ft. 1.1 acres, built in 2007, updated, in-ground pool and taxes at $4,600! Crown Point High School is rated a ten.

Thanks CGab, nice home, but has too many strikes for the current price. Backyard privacy is important to me and this home's yard is wide open.

Also not a fan of the round stones they used in basement, my choice would have been stacked stone. And looks like they used the same wood flooring/tile and carpet throughout the entire home. The acid stained basement floors look nice when new, but the polyurethane wears off over time and the concrete cracks making them look cheesy so another strike there. Nice home though and all that could be overlooked for the right price, just seems high right now given all the strikes.

The stones in the basement are made out of cement and colored. We used to do that to make the home look like we used river rock.
That "wood" flooring is butt ugly. Hate that and variegated brick.
Never used poly paint in the basement - the odor is horrendous. Always used battleship grey solid colors only as a sealer and rugs over it.

Rest assured the taxes won't be that cheap for long. This particular house is much larger, the lot is larger (we have no pool....etc.) but our taxes with the mortgage deduction are still much, much higher than $4600 in Crown Point.
