I have lived in Portage since 2013. Until recently I have never really thought about living in a city that has a great family oriented environment. Now that I have little ones, schools are another thing that I have to think about. We have found our family spends a lot of time in the Chesterton/Valpo area. It's not that we dislike Portage, but for a family with little kids, there is not much to do in Portage. We also find activities at the Y and libraries are more engaging with the little ones at Chesterton/Valpo than Portage.

We are strongly considering moving to Chesterton. We've heard great things about the school district and enjoy the town. I really want to like Portage. But when it comes to raising a family, it doesn't seem to be the best place. Do you think that will change?

Chesterton and Valpo are nicer cities overall and have a better overall trajectory going forward in time compared to Portage. For real estate investments over the long-term there is more upside potential in Chesterton over Portage.

Portage Township Schools is not regarded as a very good district. I know someone who teaches at Portage HS who says he has to kick kids out of class a decent amount. I know fights are not uncommon at PHS. Portage has a lot more poverty than Chesterton and Valparaiso which means your kids might have a higher quantity of worse influences there. Of course bad influences in wealthy communities, but higher quantity of them in Portage.

I'm not very optimistic about the future of Portage. Strikes me as becoming more like Lake Station with aspects of Merrillville while aspects of the Hobart style blue collar hometown pride remains but has declined significantly as the older crowd has died off or moved away.
