I know it's in the Portage District. My question is, where do the kids actually go?

We are considering a move to NWI. We've narrowed it to Ogden Dunes and Chesterton due to South Shore access.

We are in love with Ogden Dunes, but less than thrilled with the schools. Are there any reputable secular private options in the area? Is it possible to pay tuition to Duneland or Valpo and send them there?

Also, are there any synagogues in the area?

Thanks for any input.

Ogden Dunes is zoned for Portage schools, which is not among the better systems in the region. From what I understand the elementary and middle schools aren't that bad, but the high school leaves much to be desired. You can definitely send your kids to Chesterton or Valpo schools (both are great) though Chesterton is the logical choice because it's closer. I'm not sure how much nonresident tuition is for either system.

Temple Israel in Valparaiso is the closest synagogue to Ogden Dunes. http://www.templeisrael.info/; Facebook page //www.facebook.com/pages/Temple...15031481860281 . I believe there are also a few in Munster.

I would definitely still keep Chesterton in mind though...it has some very nice communities that are comparable to Odgen Dunes and you would not have to pay tuition for the schools.

There is also a synagogue, Temple Israel, in the Miller section of Gary ~ only about a 10-minute drive from the entrance of Ogden Dunes.

Another option for you is Munster, Indiana. It is near 80/94 and the South Shore stations in Hammond and East Chicago (yes, not the most desirable cities but the stations are safe) which make for a excellent commute to Chicago and the suburbs. It also has one of the top school systems in the state. There are two synagogues in town and I am pretty sure that Munster has the largest percentage (and numbers) of residents who practice any variation of Judaism. While Munster real estate prices are relatively high, if you were looking to move to Ogden Dunes, you should feel comfortable with the prices here. If you don't mind me asking, what is the price range of home you are looking for? Depending on your range, there are several excellent options you have. Glad to help!

P.S. If you do not mind paying the tuition to send your kid(s) to school in Chesterton, then move to Ogden Dunes. You cannot really beat the location close to the lake!

There is also Dune Acres, IN. I am pretty sure they are zoned to Duneland schools and they have a South Shore stop. The prices are very high in this secluded community and it is much smaller and quieter than Ogden Dunes. But it is worth a shot!

In Ogden Dunes, elementary would be Crisman & middle would be Willowcreek.

And yes, it's possible for a Porter county resident to pay tuition and attend another school in the county. Or it used to be last time I checked which was a couple of years ago. And at that time, the cost to go to Valpo was $2K per year.

Thanks for all the quick feedback!

Chesterton is on our short list. Munster is still a contender, but we're looking for something that feels more small town or beachy and less suburban.

Our price range is pretty open. More important than price is that we find the perfect home and community: Not too large, architecturally important/unique, lots of light, network of stay at home moms, lots of family activities, Americana, etc. It's all very abstract. I'm sure we are an agent's nightmare.

I think 2k per year is quite reasonable for tuition. We're looking at that much per month per child if we stay in the city. Hence the temptation to move.

Default Where did you end up?

My husband and I are considering moving to Ogden Dunes from the City and I am concerned about what school our kindergartener will attend. Just curious where you ended up.
