Valparaiso to the 10th power. Infinitely better downtown, better overall trajectory, better school system.

Merillville is closer to Chicago and has the mall, guess those are advantages.

Valpo of course, although there are also rural townships within Porter County that are growing faster due to more residential consutrction.

Merrillvile is much cheaper but there are areas north of US 30 (73rd and Whitcomb, many of the areas north of 61st) that are not nice at all anymore and have significant violent crime for a fairly new suburb. Much of the town is much nicer than people believe, especially the more rural areas, adjacent to Innsbrook and Turkey Creek Golf Courses, and right near Merrillville HS east of Broadway.

Valparaiso is very nice but caters to families with school age children. Yes, there's stuff to do downtown, but it gets too quiet (which is nice for old people of course).

Live where you please.
