Hello all,

I recently moved to Chicago from Ohio for a job. My parents would like to come up and visit from Ohio but have no desire to drive in downtown Chicago, so I've been looking into some alternative transport. They would be taking I-90 through Indiana and it seems feasible to jump on the South Shore line somewhere near Gary for the last leg of the trip. I'm looking at the Miller Station as a possible place for them to park their car and jump on the train.

So my questions: Does Miller seem to be a good place to get on? How available and safe is parking at the Miller stop (or other stops) for a 4 day period?

The South Shore website states that overnight parking is available at many of the stops but is not encouraged. What do you think?

Knowing nothing about the South Shore Line or Gary area, any and all input would be much appreciated! Thanks in advance!

Why don't they just drive to the South Bend airport and get on the train there. I can pretty much guarantee that the parking at the airport is safer/monitored/cheap. Whenever I go to Chicago, this is what I do. Just a thought.

Sorry, I should have specified, they will be taking U.S. 30 through Indiana before hooking up with I-90. (They live east of Fort Wayne just on the Ohio side.) South Bend would be rather far out of the way.

If they want safe parking for 4 days, they will be better served by getting on the toll road north of Fort Wayne and taking it to South Bend.

Trust me ... the south shore station parking lots between south bend and Chicago are not monitored.

I wouldn't park my car for 4 days at the Miller station. No way.

Thanks for the insight. Is the Ogden Dunes stop any better? Or is South Bend really the only decent option?

South Bend is the only option for safe, overnight parking for 4 days. They'll be at an airport. The other parking lots at the stations are just parking lots, with honor pay ... seriously, if they want to take their chances on any of the other stations, well, more power to them, but as a south shore rider from high school through now, and I'm no spring chicken, South Bend is the best option for them if they want to see their car again. Can I make it any clearer? Now, if they were doing a daytrip, pick any station, Miller, Ogden Dunes ... they'd be fine, but since they are going to be parking overnight, they will either get towed, stolen, vandalized, or if they are lucky, nothing will happen, but that's a big risk they are taking. Why so hesitant about the airport??? Plus, since the South Shore originates from the airport, they are guaranteed a pick of seats. Getting on in Miller, Ogden Dunes, Dune Acres ... depending on the TOD, the trains are packed and they may have to stand.

Okay domergurl, you've convinced me. It's too bad none of the other stops are safe or have monitored parking. Thanks for your help.

Sorry if I came off as overbearing, but South Bend Airport really is the best option. I hope your family has a great time! Will they be getting off at Randolph?

Yes, they'll be riding it all the way to Randolph then catching the red line up to Wrigleyville where I live.
