Can anyone give me a little more information about these cities? How are the schools, crime rates, etc?
I have found a little info on this site about them, but not a ton.
Thanks!

You probably wont find a whole lot about either of these towns because there isnt anything remarkable about them. The old part of Hobart is too close to Gary and pretty run down. I think there are newer sections as you go south toward Merrilville and US Hwy 30. Portage is full of "white flight refugees" from Gary. If you must choose one of these two take Portage!

We have a few friends who grew up in Hobart and loved it so much that they moved their family there when they grew up.

I've heard people have a die hard devotion to Hobart but never that much love for Portage.

All your info on crime & schools can be found online.

I have friends who just moved up to Hobart (pronounced hoBERT) against my recommendation and I'll be darned if they haven't proved me wrong. The husband teaches and coaches at HHS and they love it there, just love it.

My memory tells me that the area of Hobart that butts up against Gary ie Mississippi, Alabama streets around Ridge Rd. are quite run down. The last time I was there [2 years ago] the area closer to Merrillville had alot of new housing.

We moved to Hobart 3 yrs ago and love it. There is no town without crime or something going on ,but Hobart is quaint and we haven,t found anything really bad about it. They just built the NEW High School. We have shopping close by on Rt.30 and since we live on the north/east end we shop a lot on Rt.6 in Portage so everything is fairly convenient .

Do you have any idea how I have just spent 10 years pronouncing it?
People just let me go on and on with it.
