Hi all,

Any thoughts on LOFS as a weekend getaway? Why are the taxes so erratic in there? Are the people friendly to newcomers?

Thanks!

A portion of LOFS is in Lake county - the other in Porter county ... thus the property tax differences.

LOFS is more of a year round residential community.

As to friendliness - some are, some aren't, just like everywhere else.

not really a weekend getaway kind of place, unless you are retired possibly? If so, the "all within the bubble" living may be very attractive. What are you hoping to find in terms of a "weekend getaway"? What are you looking to do while at your Weekend Getaway? It will help me to give you a better answer.

LOFS used to be considered the "elite" and some people still believe that they are. Many people that live in other areas that have kids involved in softball, baseball or t-ball hate dealing with these people.

Having said that, there is a good mix of people as far as age. There are a lot of kids and there is more diversity then people realize. I go to LOFS a lot.

They have a nice park, the beach can become very crowded and I think that they have had some summer concerts in the area. There is a restaurant that my ex husband says makes the best cheeseburgers. My ex-inlaws golf. I think that if I walk out of their back door then I'm on the golf course. They enjoy living there, they do make jokes about how easy it is to get in, although it is gated.

The cool thing is that its next to a grocery store Amelia's which offers cooking classes. I have not been to any. There is a bar near there called Gators and if you need a gyro fix there is a Niko's. I think that is the name of it.

If golf is primary, then sure! It is very laid back. And you can seriously never drive farther than 10 miles for EVERY thing you need in life. It was planned that way ..."in the bubble". Lots of kids, families, and then retirees. Might want to check out the condos right on the lake for a getaway? Easy maintenance, front row for anything happening on the lake (fireworks, boat parades etc..) Good luck!

Thanks pandamonium and lastimewemove for writing back. Bubble works ok for us, we just want to be able to get there quickly and not move around too much. Im not too worried about the people, dont know how much interaction I would have with them. Burger sounds good!! I could also use the cooking classes. People tell me there is some fine dining in Valpo.

From LOFS, it'll take you about 20 min. to get to downtown Valpo.

And here's a link to info on Valpo's downtown restaurants: www.valpodining.com

I live in NW Indiana (16 years) and have friends in LOFS. I can't imagine LOFS as a weekend getaway personally, it's just another residential community albeit a nice enough one. It is starting to show it's age though. I don't know where you're getting away from (Chicago?) but I'd be looking along the south shore of Lake Mich if it was me, YMMV. Right along the shore is expensive (by Indiana standards, but not Chicago), but there are lots of reasonable bargains the more you come inland. Best of luck...
