Are there any safe parts of Gary (or East Chicago) for a family of four, whose father will take an upper-level management position in the casino there? He wants a short commute to work. Thanks.

Maybe parts of Hammond, Merillville, Hobart, Lake Station, Portage and Whiting would work. If you want Gary, try Miller/Miller Beach.

There are fairly close places like Crown Point that would be nice or Miller Beach in Gary.

For me it wouldn't even be a safety issue. It would be a public school issue. If there are children, I would be prepared to pay for private schools in East Chicago or Gary, even Miller Beach. You don't define what he considers a short commute, but plenty of nearby towns would be less than 30 minutes or so to the casinos. I would look into Highland, Griffith, or Munster before seriously considering East Chicago or Gary. Those three towns will put close to the casinos, but would offer schools that are better.

I didn't think about this earlier because I don't know about the commute, but I would look at Chesterton because they have good public schools.

15 minutes or shorter, or 30 by bicycle.

This short of a commute - especially by bicycle - will never happen.

In fact, for safety reasons (like, getting hit by a truck) I wouldn't recommend riding a bike to any of the casinos.

Chuckity--How does the closure of the Cline Ave Bridge impact the drive to the casinos? I'm not sure where the closure begins. I've never been to any of the casinos, not a casino kind of girl, but it looks like Cline Ave would be the fastest way to get there. Is it still open that far north? That could impact the OP's commuting time.

Sorry OP, but I really think you will be very hard pressed to find a safe home within that commuting distance on bike or car unless the man has off hours--Griffith might be possible during off hours in a car. And Chuckity is right--he cannot plan on biking to the casinos. It's unrealistic for lots of reasons.

The closure at Cline starts right after Chicago Ave. So yep, that would totally effect a casino commute - I didn't think about that. Great point.

I'm not a casino chick either - in fact, the only one I've been to is the one in Whiting ... and that was YEARS ago. (So long ago that you had to make a reservation to get on!)

(And pssst ... you're a SHE? Wow! I don't know why I thought you were male ...)

That's kind of funny Chuckity. I assumed you were a male, but it's the name thing.

The spot where Cline is closed makes sense to me. That's about where it ended before the bridge was built if I recall correctly. I couldn't remember the name of the street.
