Of those 400, 260 of them are from L.A.P, we get first crack at the jobs in Chicago but most of those wont or cant leave louisville. We are getting updates daily on how it will all shake out. your intestinal fortitude in dealing with this stressful time is indicative of how you will fit in very well up in "the region".

We may only be there a year or two so we are thinking of just renting a house. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Jeff Boy
My honest opinion ... you're only going to be here a year or two, don't care about the schools - save your commuting time and live in Hegewisch. (Technically Chicago ... but not really urban in the true sense of the word.)

Your commute will be under 5 minutes. Tops.

I would look for a rental in the Avalon Trails section - tons of multi-generational city workers (cops, firemen, et.) ... you'll definitely get more of a sense of community here than in a lot of NWI towns.

Depending on the winter weather, I am also planning to move to NW Indiana by early March. However, I currently live south of Boston, Massachusetts. There is no family here and when I moved here over a year ago, only knew 1 person. I have been blessed to make several great friendships and have found that people are friendly in this area. The employment rate is the worst that it's been since the 70's and although I have many qualifications...there are apparently many more people qualified. Add to this, the fact that all my friends are married and I'm single, so there isn't much nightlife or potential dating possibilities for me....LOL.

Being fortunate in not having much to keep me here, I can relocate anywhere. There are no children; just my pup.

My original plan was to move to Texas, where it's much warmer and snows less....LOL. That's a big difference from Indiana...you may say. Yes, I concur with that! Indiana though has someone that has become very special to me....so for the sake of love! So, here I find myself interested in finding information about the state that I'll soon call "home"!

If anyone should know of jobs available, kindly let me know. Thank you in advance for any assistance that you may be able to provide.

P.S.. I was told that folks are nice there, which is obviously apparent.
Jobs are extremely scarce in most of northern Indiana. If you're determined to move to Hoosierland, and don't have a job lined up in advance, you may have to settle in a different part of the state, where jobs are more plentiful. Good luck with that!

Just like angelfish70, I wanna thank everyone on this thread for the info. I have a possible job lined up in NWI as a tugboat driver in Burns Harbor (by Gary). Wife is from Louisville (sorry to hear about the plant Jeff Boy...good luck) and we are looking at places up there. We really like Crown Point/Merrillville, seems like a nice area. We are coming from Hawaii. LOL before everyone goes on with the 'what the hell are you thinking!!', yes Hawaii is nice but EXPENSIVE! I am a young merchant marine officer with a coast guard license to operate ships, and the job market for that here in the islands where I grew up is slim pickings. Besides, I miss the cold lol. I have 2 young kids (2 and a half year old son and 6 month old daughter) so schools are important to us. Wife has been with Starbucks for years. Crown Point is within the hour from Burns Harbor that I am allowed to live. Anyone have any insight on pre-schools and other info on the area?

Congrats on the possible job SailorJay! It will be quite a change moving to NWI from Hawaii - I just honeymooned there recently and it was beautiful.

Although it's vastly different from Hawaii, NWI is a great place to call home with a lot of close knit communities. As you mentioned in your post above, Crown Point is a really great family-oriented town with very friendly folks. There are numerous parks, several bike trails and it's very close to tons of restaurants and shopping. In addition, I would also recommend the towns of Schererville and St. John which are close to Crown Point and offer a great choice of schools as well.

I don't have kids in the pre-school age, but you can find out alot of information on Crown Point schools (including pre-school) at the following link:

Crown Point Schools - Crown Point Indiana School Ratings - Public and Private

You can also use the same link above to view information for Schererville and St. John by just searching for them in the search box.

Best of luck!

Pre-schools, no.

But the 4 star schools (just announced last week) in Crown Point are: Eisenhower Elementary School, Jerry Ross Elementary School and Solon Robinson Elementary School

There were no Merrillville schools on the list.

If you're searching to buy in Crown Point and want Crown Point schools, you need to be in Center Township - there are certain areas with a CP address (in Ross Township) that will have Merrillville schools.

But if you want good schools and are going to be working Burns Harbor, why haven't you looked at Chesterton? It would be a MUCH easier commute for you and the schools are great too.

Schererville & St. John especially would be quite a hike to Burns Harbor.

I, too, would recommend Chesterton. Or Valparaiso. Chesterton's a lovely little town. Valpo is just south of C'ton and has more shopping and restautants to choose from, plus a new movie theatre, also LOTS of parks and a huge new YMCA, two community theatres, excellent downtown area. Both are great places to raise a family. I live in Valpo and drive through Burns Harbor every day on my way to work in Gary. Very easy drive to Burns Harbor from anywhere in Porter County (C'ton & Valpo). The drive from south Lake County (including Crown Point) to Burns Harbor is kind of a pain.

Good luck with your search, and welcome to Northwest Indiana!

Just found out they want us up there mid June to start up the second shift at Chicago Assembly Plant. Quite a few of my coworkers are said they are going to transfer. If there are any apartment managers or realtors reading this you may want to contact the local 862 in Louisville.
