My husband may be offered a job in Gary, but the area is called Black Oak. I have done some research but I haven't had much results because it's considered to be Gary. I was wondering if anyone can give me any information about the crime and living in "Black Oak" not the City of Gary. I am currently pregnant and will have to consider my baby when we move, if anyone can also suggest areas that are close to Black Oak/Gary that are safer that would be wonderful. I am also looking at the job aspect for myself because I would have to work and my area of work is baking/food preparation. Thank you to anyone who can give me any information.

I would look in the Griffith or Highland area if you want to be close to Black Oak, but not in it. In what part of Black Oak will he be working?

Griffith or Highland would put you close enough to areas so you can find work too.

Were not exactly sure where in Black Oak it is. What are the differences and which is which? Also, if we decide not to live in Black Oak which of the towns you mentioned would you recommend. Thank you for your help.

Griffith is closer. I have family that live there, it's a nice town. Highland is nice too.

Does anyone remember the "This Is It" store in Black Oak back in the 50's?

Black Oak is the most ghetto part of Gary.

It's just like the rest of Gary in that it's pretty trashy, but because it's mostly White, people ignore that fact.

It's still there.

I bought a Black Carhartt jacket from there.

I'm currently looking to move to Indiana from Chicago,Il but I have a decent paying job in Illinois I don't mind the commute it's the cost of living in Illinois that's ridiculous all around I need some feedback on which county is better lake or porter I saw the duneland village apts are nice but also saw some beautiful apts in portage which would be a nicer area? is Gary getting any better I'm born & raised in Chicago my cousin live in Griffith, IN since 2002 & also from Chicago he said he like it cause the cost of living is cheaper he got me wanting to leave Illinois but keep my job of course

First of all, let me say I think you're making a wise decision moving to Indiana from Chicago. As far as nice towns to live, I honestly wouldn't live in Gary or Portage. To answer your question, Gary really is NOT getting any better, and Portage has it's rough parts too. Neither would be a great place to live. If you're going to be commuting to Illinois on a daily basis (I do the same), you should look at Lake County, specifically Munster or Dyer as your two best bets. Schererville, St. John, and Highland are also viable options.

Depending on your price range, Highland, Schererville, Munster, or Dyer would be good choices.
