Aloha all,
I've found this thread very helpful, and while some of the posts may be "off topic" by Tuihamo's standards, other people are reading this thread! I particularly appreciate hearing how Oahu residents interpret questions and answer them , either directly or by spinning off into whatever it may have reminded them of.
My wife and I are moving in a few months and plan to live simply. This thread has been helpful, directly, but has also shed insight into other aspects of Hawaiian culture and life. Mahalo for keeping it colorful!
I do hope that more contributors like the above budget be shared, regardless of which side of the income/living standard spectrum... This would really give a general view of how costs of living in Hawaii would be.
Agreed! This is very helpful for anyone considering moving to Hawaii. It is understood by most that cost of living is what you make of it (do you want to live in a tent and eat ramen noodles? lol)... but seeing a snapshot of different lifestyles from different individuals is more helpful than one generalized estimate.
Would love to see a few more. My husband has a chance of transferring with work to the HNL location, so we are starting to look into everything.

rent - 1200 includes reserved parking stall, electricity and water, nice one bedroom with hardwood floors, stainless appliances in a low-rise building in Honolulu
internet - 35/mo cable via Oceanic, no cable tv
smartphones - 150/mo, pretty standard pricing thru AT&T
groceries - 350/mo
eating out/going out to bars/entertainment - 400-500/mo
car insurance - minimum coverage - 45/mo
renter's insurance - 15/mo
medical - 0, company paid in full for now
gas - currently $4.35/gal, we spend maybe $150/mo at most. we both bike or bus to work and school, pretty much only drive to run errands or get out of town.
It is what you make it, but it's definitely doable.
Can not seem to get it to work, but once you are on site search city by city comparison to get a ballpark idea of your increase or decrease in costs on certain items.
