Horizon DOOR to Port 20’ Container Estimate: $3,602 (divide by 2: $1,800, 1/4 space: $900) Horizon DOOR to Port 40’ Container Estimate: $5,169 (divide by 2: $2,584, by 3: $1,723 )
Matson Port to Port 40’ Container Estimate: $4,958
Matson Port to Port 20’ Container Estimate: $3,851
(then add more for Matson Door pick up or use www.progressive-transportation.com for +/-$225)
Pasha, is currently shipping only commercial goods. Said to check back in a month or 2 when they add to their fleet. Currently also ships from San Diego to Honolulu in 40’ containers.
Horizon: My Door quote is from Southbay, Los Angeles 90717 which is only a couple miles from the port. They allow 72 hours to load they container.
Based on the numbers above, it seems worth wile to get a 40' container and share with 1 or 2 people to save money. I am looking to move May - July. I am buying a Kaneohe Townhouse in Bankruptcy court so I do not have firm dates yet. Since my husband is already in Honolulu, if someone needs to ship during a specific time, I can send goods earlier and keep them in HI storage.

Wow, good prices; makes me want to give this some thought. I would totally take up much of your 20' and probably half of your 40' I just need to get my stuff to California. Hmmmmm!
Your stuff would probably end up docking out of of California anyway. I found Penske had some decent truck rentals for long hauls. My hubby has been in Honolulu since August and on this message board too (M808) in case you ever need to chat.

I've seen his posts and figured he was your significant other! Got to discuss with mine and get back to you.

Keep in mind that a 40' container isn't allowed or won't fit in many residential areas. I couldn't get one to my place if I tried, due to a narrow road and a sharp corner. A 40 footer is really designed for a loading dock at a warehouse. This is one of the reasons 20' containers are far more popular for this kind of DIY move. And coordinating several people loading or unloading all their stuff within a 72 hr. window is sometimes challenging.
Thanks OpenD, there is a storage facility that offers free container parking near the port of Honolulu. http://www.hypac.net/free-ocean-freight.htm Though it would change the quote from door to door, my apartment and Hypac are very close to ports.
The best solution if we can share a container is have it delivered to Hypac where each household will empty their things into a private storage unit on site. Then they won't feel rushed and stressed.

Looks like a good option, but notice that the parked container is about 4' off the ground, and it doesn't come with the ramp you see in the photo, so be sure you can find one when you need it.
