Ever wondered how far your money will go toward a home purchase on Oahu and what that house might look like ? Or, if you are relocating to Oahu, what would you get for the Median price on Oahu -vs- what the same money would buy you in your hometown ?

This video looks at 5 houses for sale today in 5 different areas of the Island for todays Median home price.

I thought it was interesting to get a look inside the different home in disfferent areas and what the Median price will buy you.

The last one was especially interesting to me because it was the closest to town but it was less than 800 sq ft.

Can you afford an Oahu home? | KITV Home - KITV Home

That one in Kaimuki was such a dump - and only 1 bath - no yard. There is no way I'd ever live in Kaimuki.

The Makakilo house was nice - but I'd never be able to do the daily 60-90 minute commute to town each way. They didn't even try to bother to find a median home in Kailua or Hawaii Kai.

The kids who inherited that property must be thrilled and wealthy and loving life right now.

True....

How many years have you lived in Hawaii? 20 years on Maui for me. I could never live there again as the negatives FAR outweigh the positives. (especially the weather)

I started working in Hawaii in the late 90's - coming out at least every other month.

Moved here in 2008 - and took a break of all places in Portland after a friend asked if I could help with a startup - I didn't make it thru the entire winter - the money just wasn't worth it.

I did love the poker/gambling, no sales tax, the view (when I had one which wasn't often), Jake's - but I and the wife was pretty miserable - we couldn't even make it across the street to Whole Foods without getting drenched (and I don't even like Whole Foods) - if you watch Portlandia, my building had the bike tire scene at the Pearl.

Thanks, Waikikiboy. What an eye opener!

Just to compare, in our neighborhood on the south end of the Big Island, one can buy a nice, relatively new 1700 square foot home on 1/3 acre for around $300,000. That's how we could afford to retire to Hawaii!

Dude no wonder I can't relate to you your so malahini and really explains your point of view of Oahu. For some reason someone said you were older then 6 1/2 years and you went back farther then 90s. Oh well. Your still good with the numbers.
