Hmmm all the locals raving about Zippys or such? Maybe theres something about Zippys that isn't obvious?
That's why I said to check out the location of the poster. If you grew up eating spam and rice versus pate' and Bordeaux, you might be fine with Zippys cuisine. Most visitors to Hawaii do not eat spam and rice. Prices to even get here preempt visiting Hawaii for mid or low income people.
Not a slam against Zippys or local taste, but a reality check that most the world views spam and such as undesirable grinds.Ymmv.
Its one of those 101 things different about hawaii things. Zippys is a community, gathering place that we locals hangout at.
Perhaps Zippy's was a local gathering place 40 years ago. The food is awful. You don't want to gather somewhere where the food isn't good.
If you said the current local gathering place was California Pizza Kitchen I could but into that. Wait is usually 1 hour+ at all locations for dinner with a large gathering of locals sitting outside the restaurant. I've given up on CPK due to the wait times at dinnertime.
Nothing mysterious, just a nice word for the usual mix of cigarette smoke, spilled drinks etc... of an old, well worn establishment. If you thought I meant pakalolo, there may have been that too.

Generally at the Harbor Pub there's a DEA agent or two trying to fit in. Usually they will be sitting at the bar, frequently a male and female couple, but they don't really look like they like each other and his shoes will usually be closed toe and really shiny. La Maz was too scuffy or something, generally the DEA agents wouldn't hang out there. But, this was long ago history, maybe things are different now?
Things aren't like that at Harbor Pub in 2015. Popular for Happy Hour and good pizza. Just a local dive bar. I go a couple of times a month and do sports trivia with the bartender Jeff.
