The plan calls for up to 25 modified shipping containers at the site. Each modified container will be divided into three or four units of approximately 40-53 square feet. Each living unit will have windows, a lockable door and portable lighting. Pets that do not pose a threat to other residents will be allowed.

The city is going to need more than what they have planned? I remember those news cast's a few months ago talking about what you can do with old shipping container. Will here is one idea. They will need some more converted containers, if this is going to work? It is not a long term solution. Not a lot of space to work with Island wide? Will see how it goes?

Should be interesting - Sand Island is way off the beaten path and 40 sq ft is about the size of a small bathroom with tub - for comparison sake, the average 2 car garage is about 400 sq ft - so think about fitting 10 units to live in your garage.

It's not really "living spaces" it's more like sleeping spaces. If a homeless person were able to have even a closet sized space to lock themselves into for sleeping securely at night, you'd think that would be an improvement. They don't need a lot of individual space since there's shared common areas as well as shared bathing facilities. It is pretty close to the waste water treatment plant and there's a bit of odor, but they are also close to Sand Island park, so they'd be able to go there during the day.

Having someplace they won't get harassed might be of value to them, too.

The notion of using shipping containers as housing - especially in native communities - is being used in Canada.

I agree. Will just have to wait and see how it works out.
To me it sounds like my Birthing (Sleeping quarters) Quarters, tripple high bunk beds we had on the ship.
It's not hard, and your get use to your small living space.

Bwahaaha.

That was proposed about 10 years ago and it was bashed as being inhumane.

If the article is to be believed, it's a step.... not sure it's the right direction but maybe it will free up space in town for the outer dwelling homeless. Sometimes homeless people don't really want to rejoin society. I can see it getting expensive.

On the other hand, won't it give hope to the people who relocate to HI without a job?
