The first six people move into the facility Thursday, with full capacity at 90 people.

According to IHS’ Connie Mitchell, the goal is to have people transitioned into permanent housing within 60 days.

We’re really about welcoming people who are motivated and really ready to work toward getting into housing, so we’re going to be connecting them up to all of our housing resources, making sure that they’re really focused on doing the things they need to do to get out of here in 60 days,” Mitchell said.

It's funny how we frivolously spend hundreds of millions of our hard-earned tax dollar on subsidizing "affordable housing" by building high rise condos in Kakaako that cost $300,000-$500,000 PER UNIT to build and renting them out for $700-$900/mo. But when it comes to our homeless and mentally ill, we can't even provide enough subsidy to give them access to the electrical grid. Seriously. Battery powered lights?

Still, it's a start. Hopefully the facility is well utilized.

When compared to what we do for our chronically homeless (often a result of mental illness, drug abuse, etc), yes. Point is we subsidize single occupants and small families to the tune of $100-$200k EACH (or more). But when it comes to housing 90 homeless people we won't even invest in basic infrastructure needs like ELECTRICITY.

Those shipping containers are sure small for single's. But at least you are out of the elements.
The goal is to find full time housing and a start, which is good!

At least they aren't trying to cram a couple of dozen folks in a shipping container (i.e. "transitional housing") and ship it somewhere else.
