Hello! We found a great house in Hawaii Kai and are trying to find a swimming beach that's not too bad of a drive. Makapu'u is an easy drive, so is Sandy Beach, but we want to live to enjoy our time here. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Head to Waimanalo - especially in the mornings - the winds pick up in my experience in the afternoon. Next choice is Kailu - a 30 minute drive give or take. Or, the quieter parts of Waikiki nearer the aquarium side.

Thanks, whtviper1! My sister lives in Ka'a'awa so I guess Kailua is a good meeting point.

I don't know how the swimming is at any of them, but there are several beach parks between Hawaii Kai and Diamond Head:

Kuliouou Beach Park
Kawaikui Beach Park
Wailupe Beach Park
Kahala Beach

There are reviews of all these on line.

And of course there is Hanauma Bay, for snorkeling.

Kuliouou, Kawaikui and Wailupe are generally rather rocky and shallow. Not so 'beachy', but great places to hang out, barbecue spend time with friends and family. I would not recommend attempting to swim at these parks. IMHO, Kahala is pretty much the same as the previous three. Waimanalo is great, as WV pointed out. San Souci at the Diamond Head end of Kalakaua is good for swimming and I usually don't have issues with parking on the weekdays. Lanikai is a wonderful beach, but is sometimes overrun, especially in the weekends.

Thanks, also good info. We headed up to Lanikai today after some rough waters in Makapu'u (which was more manageable when we went last week). My older daughter can handle it but my younger one gets discouraged and I'm too chicken to get in. I'll look into San Souci-sounds like that might be a good option when we're heading into town.

Msjwilliams, you might have already heard this, but please be especially cautious if you and your children go to Sandy. The shore break (the condition where the waves break at the shoreline) can be particularly viscous and profoundly dangerous.
I can't over-emphasize this enough. Especially if you and your family have limited experience swimming in the ocean. Never turn your back to the ocean regardless how calm it appears to be.

I would not attempt Sandy's.... infamous for broken necks for the EXPERIENCED and non alike. Especially
because the backwash can create an unfavorable situation and the fact it can slam you on the sand when it closes out... hence, the broken necks...

The shore break at Sandy can be particularly vicious and profoundly dangerous. Viscous couplings are often found in automotive applications. Yikes, my teachers constantly reminded me to proofread. Obviously, a skill I never learned to acquire based on my posts.....

No way would we try Sandy! Might sit out there to watch but reading about it scared me enough to never go in the water. I knew we'd be limited with the beach situation in Hawaii Kai but it ticked off so many other boxes that I was willing to deal with the lack of a swimming beach. The kids at Makupu'u are amazing with their boogie boards-also lots of fun to watch!
