Unfortunately, many in the military, the police, EMS, doctors (yes, I know the order doesn't apply to police, EMS, doctors, etc., and couldn't apply to military even if the mayor wanted it to, but I'm just making an observation). I am thinking of our first responders especially, both in Hawaii and throughout the country/world.
Can someone list off a few critical labor functions that are "essential activities?" I'm having a hard time thinking of any, and hope that this wasn't a partisan decision by Caldwell.

Airlines. All the utilities are essentially unionized. State and City workers. Police and Fire are union. Etc.

Acknowledging that police and fire are union (among other critical services) and critical services, what functions would their unions provide during this restriction that are critical? Especially services that couldn't be done over the phone or "from home." That's the disconnect for me I guess.

Yeah, same here. Usually I don't really think better of anyone who just does their job but being a first responder or just working in a hospital now gotta be really tough. Dealing with the public and this virus would just be too much for me. Takes a certain personality to do that kind of work. That's why I gotta have a job where I don't deal with the public too much. This is going to be a stressful next month or so. I'd much rather be working now.
Saw this comment. The state is doing very little to help people outside of first responder. They're basically waiting for the feds to rain money from the heavens...

What worries me is the state and counties have not announced any sort of cutback in "non-essential" functions. Essentially, they're running their budgets as if the cash flows weren't suddenly disrupted. GET and TAT is hammered, fees for buses, etc all slashed, etc. They need to announce weekly 1 a day furloughs for all non-essential personnel (exempting fire, police, ems, etc). If they can afford to spend all that money on non-essential salaries, they can afford to support businesses and individuals hurt by the virus. Why are they wasting money that they don't have?

At this point it is a matter of when furloughs happen, not if. With restaurants closing, hotels closing, flying practically shutting down, retail stores closed - what will the unemployment rate look like? 50% - perhaps more?
Each day we get hit with something new - furloughs and massive State/County layoffs likely one of the announcements coming soon
Well, now we ALL get to stay home. Starting tomorrow night at midnight.
So much for mere Mayors, now the Governor has made the "Stay At Home!!!" order for the whole state. Maybe we will get caught up on the yard work after all.
