My landlord has sent me my security deposit via check through regular mail. It was supposedly mailed on the 12th of last month but I haven't received anything yet.

I was wondering if it takes over a month to receive mail in California from Hawaii? I've been searching on google and I can't find any information about the length for regular mail besides the standard 7-10 days for priority mail.

What are the odds that I'm being played as a fool? Perhaps my deposit got lost in the mail? I'll patiently wait, in hopes that my mail will soon arrive. One can only hope.

You should get first class mail from Oahu to much of the mainland within 3-4 days - especially California. Most of the commercial air carriers have contracts with the postal service.

My birthday card sent to my Father last week to Chicago has already been received.

I’d say played. Or, to be kind, maybe he got something wrong on the address.

I’d ask the landlord to resend the check with a tracking number if he/she is unable to deposit directly via Zelle or some other direct manner.

Several years ago I mailed my VISA payment in December. It arrived in California 15 days later earning me a $30 late fee. (I called and they reversed the fee then I switched to auto-pay.)

USPS admits mail moves slowly in December due to the holiday volume. This year is worse than normal.

Two weeks ago I mailed a birthday card to a friend in California. On his birthday, Dec. 6th, it had still not arrived.

To be fair. You aren’t on Oahu.

I agree, but even if they transship the mail to Oahu first it shouldn't take an extra week. (Even if they are using Young Brothers .)

While in Oregon I receive mail from oahu every month. It is almost always in the 5 to 7 day range. Longest was 9 days.

If I don't receive my deposit, what are the legal course of action I can take? I am a complete noob when it comes to the process. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Have you tried emailing or calling the landlord? Ask them to send via Paypal or Venmo?

If the landlord is ignoring you - I'd write a demand letter - certified - return receipt.

If that fails - you'll need to get yourself back to Hawaii and sue in small claims court.

Leaving the island before the money is in your hand can lead to things like this. You'll have hoops to jump thru if the landlord is ignoring you. Landlord's have 14 days to pay you.
