Husband would be working at the University of Hawaii - Manoa campus.

What areas would you recommend to live, based on the following?

1. Proximity to campus - 30 min+ commute isn't unreasonable
2. Family type community feel
3. Good public schools - one child has an IEP so looking for principal/teachers who like working with a families need.
4. Semi-decent housing options - ideally a 4 bedroom

Initial research we've looked at Hawaii Kai, Kailua but it also looks like houses in Miliani are a lot cheaper.

And regarding Ewa Beach (although I get that's a long commute), why are those houses so much bigger and cheaper?

Thanks in advance.
It's unlikely that there is a school left in America unfamiliar with, or unable to service an IEP unless you child has a severe condition?

Find a rental in Manoa or as close to Manoa as possible, IMHO. Then you'll have more time to be with your kids instead of on the highway in traffic. As for the IEP, just use the school for socialization and teach the kids what you want them to know yourself. Everyone has been doing distance and online learning, may as well continue with that and then you know what education your kid is getting.

Sunflowers02, where did you end up moving? I am considering moving to Oahu with my family from Kauai sometime in the next few years. One child of mine also has an IEP.

My husband ended up finding a house in Niu Valley. I only just arrived with the kids a week ago - so nowhere near settled in. My kids start school next week at Aina Haina Elementary and Niu Valley Middle School (this will be the kid with the IEP). So I really don't know what it's going to be like yet........ fingers crossed.

Congrats, Niu Valley is a great neighborhood. Your husband probably already realized that the the rush hour traffic commute isn't bad in the morning and only minimal in the afternoon. I attended Niu Valley Middle School (they called it Niu Valley "intermediate" back in those days); I'm assuming it's still a great school. Good luck with your new place and hope it works out with the kids.
