Hello, I mean Aloha everyone! I just found this web site and after reading some threads, boy am I scared!!! I am making the move to Hawaii from Ca this summer. That is 9 months from today. I am a Middle School Principal and have been in administration for 6 years. From my conversations with Hawaii DOE, this is what I understand. (Please correct me if I am wrong, or if you have suggestions.) I cannot become a Principal, right off the bat. Regardless of experience, I must start off as a VP. And this is assuming that DOE will place me at a site. I guess I cannot even call Principals in Hawaii of the towns I want to live in. One thread said doing this would jeopordize my chances of getting a job. Then I was told that after I get a job as a VP, it would be my Principal's choice if I could move up and regain Principal status.
Please someone tell me that I am wrong. I am looking at the Mililani/Kapolei area, and I would really like to know how much my salary would be cut by. Again according to DOE, I could be gaining only 2/3 of my current salary as a VP or even 1/3 if I returned to teaching. Does anyone have experience in this area? Or is there a thread that I can look at for these answers?

I wish that I could say that you're wrong, but that's the "price of paradise." Just be thankful that you aren't in law enforcement like ex-Maryland police chief Charles Moose who had to start over as a rookie cop when he moved to Honolulu.
Not good news Jonah. But thanks for being honest. Perhaps I should start a new thread on former Middle School Principal seeks job outside of education...(Hey not a bad idea.)
