Honolulu is a great city to be young in. Loads of fun stuff to do. Don't forget to go to classes!

I can only speak from second hand experience. My daughter attends UH and is in her 4th year. She really likes the small classes and the abilty to get to know her profs. Its kind of a commuter college, so the dorms tend to be filled with mainland & outer island kids. There's no greek system to speak of..

She did dorms her first 2 yrs, then moved into an apartment with 2 friends. Rents are high, but tuition is a little cheaper than many of places. And you won't be paying an arm & leg for food plans in your own place, although its required to live in a dorm freshman year.

On campus parking is a pricey and difficult to get. Bus is free for students.

Overall, I'd say UH is safe, friendly and reasonably priced. Hardest part is paying for visits home. We alternated with her coming home Christmas & summer and us visiting spring break & Thanksgiving.

The campus has really nice new dorms that are LEED certified (they meet certain "green" standards). The student body is quite diverse, and some of the classes I took had more out-of-state students than in-state. The area near the university has some decent bars and coffee shops. There are also a couple of health food stores. The dorms can get pretty crazy, esp during the summer semester, with drunken students everywhere partying. The campus has some great food options (I'd forgoe the meal plan). There are two vegetarian food stands, and one food stand serving superb Indian food. There are a few food courts (one has a bar in it) and a bunch of corporate fast-food joints scattered about.

Yes, our daughter lived in Frear hall last year. Nice, new and has a/c unlike most the old dorms. I think it was around 7K? Can't remeber....Meal plans are required if you live in a dorm(2K?), but not if you're off campus. UH has several reciprocity programs, so check with your local universities.

Out of state student tuition is moderately expensive, and the requirements for becoming eligible for in-state tuition are strict, and from our experience, closely overseen and monitored by the UH admin. It is something to keep in mind when examining your options. IMHO, UH has outstanding departments and programs in Marine Sciences and East Asian Languages and Literature.
