I have a tentative job offer at Hickam AFB. While it's not a sure thing, I'm doing some research to see if I can even afford living there. I would be going alone, no kids or pets. I'm not a club person, and I have no problem being a home body. My concern lies in finding a place to live and a car. I don't know how much it costs to ship a vehicle (tried using a websiite, but it was down), and I would be ok with just renting a room, is that a pretty common practice? I just would like as much information as possible so that I can make an informed decision should the time come. Thanks.
Costs about $1000 to ship a vehicle through Matson, Horizon or Pasha. Your boss my offer some relocation help... or might not. The common line goes: if your car is old and crappy, don't bother to ship it and just find a new one there. If your car is newer, better to ship. From what I've seen, condos and apartments in Honolulu cost a minimum of $1000 per month, usually more. Buying would be out of the question for most people - it's a case where "if you have to ask, you can't afford it). Scour these threads for "cost of living" using the search function on the upper right side of your screen and you'll find a wealth of information. Sperling's Best Places is also helpful for basic statistics. I say do it while you're single and unstrapped, though, and definitely before you get a dog.
Yea it's feasible -- If you're looking to save some money you could scour craigslist for "roommates wanted."
If you are set on living downtown, it will probably cost you close to $1000/mo. like the previous poster said. If you poke around a bit -- maikiki, kalihi valley, manoa, punchbowl -- you can probably find somewhere between $500 (hole in the wall) and $1000. These areas all have easy access to downtown and < 30 minute commute to Hickam. If you're looking for something closer to work, search Aiea, Pearl City, Salt Lake.
BTW, Hickam is known for having a pretty decent Lemon Lot to find used cars.
be careful about craigslist roomies.
when i first moved to honolulu, i went that route temporarily until i found my own place.
i met a few good friends doing that, but their subsequent roomies were mostly wackos, flakes, or had money problems.
or maybe it was just that it was waikiki.
