We are looking to move from NC to FL. I will be either going to UNF or UF. We need a 2 bedroom apt/house/townhouse to rent for the year. Our budget is $600 a month.

We have a 2 year old and a cat.

Are there any places we should avoid?

It depends on where you decide to live - Jacksonville or Gainesville. In Gainesville, the closer you are to campus, the more the apartment complex will feel like a dorm. The further away from campus, the more you will find young families, but the higher the rent will be. If you nail down a city, you will get more of a response.

I have already asked about Jacksonville in their forum. I guess I should have worded the OP better. Where in Gainesville should we avoid?

Avoid NE Gainesville. Very rough, high crime. SW has some cheap apartment complexes. I live in Sun Bay, not fancy, but not bad for $475 to $600 a month. I have a 2BR for $575. The upgraded units are around $575 to $600 for a 2 BR, cheaper for a 1. It's nice and quiet. They own two other properties across the street with pretty much the same prices. You can ask about them at the office at Sun Bay. There are a lot of apt. complexes here in SW, but I would avoid Arbor Park. It has a lot of drug dealers, and I've seen drug deals going down in the parking lot in broad daylight.

There is an area near I-75 that is pretty rough too, Linton Oaks. Stay away from there.

Go to UF, one of the few good things about Florida. You won't regret it. Hopefully you'll get accepted, as they've become more selective these days. Good luck.
